Historical Context
India's struggle for independence was a long and arduous journey that spanned nearly two centuries. The quest for self-rule began in earnest during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by a growing nationalist movement and widespread discontent with British colonial policies.
Key Historical Milestones:
First War of Independence (1857): Often referred to as the Sepoy Mutiny, this was one of the earliest and most significant uprisings against British rule. Although it was ultimately quelled, it laid the groundwork for future resistance.
Formation of Indian National Congress (1885): Established as a platform for political dialogue and reform, the Indian National Congress became a major force in the struggle for independence. Leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and later, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi played crucial roles within the Congress.
Gandhi’s Leadership and Nonviolent Resistance (1920s-1940s): Mahatma Gandhi's approach of nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha) and civil disobedience gained widespread support. Landmark events such as the Salt March (1930) and the Quit India Movement (1942) mobilized millions of Indians in the fight for freedom.
Post-War Period and Independence (1940s): After World War II, Britain faced increasing pressure to decolonize. The Labour government elected in 1945 was committed to ending colonial rule. The path to independence was marked by significant political negotiations, including the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which led to the partition of India and Pakistan.
